چکیده

We investigate the relationship between the present day optical luminosity function of galaxies and the X–ray luminosity function of Seyfert 1s to determine the fraction of galaxies which host Seyfert 1 nuclei and their Eddington ratios. The local type 1 AGN X–ray luminosity function is well reproduced if ∼ 1% of all galaxies are type 1 Seyferts which have Eddington ratios of ∼ 10−3. However, in such a model the X–ray luminosity function is completely dominated by AGN in E and S0 galaxies, contrary to the observed mix of Seyfert host galaxies. To obtain a plausible mix of AGN host galaxy morphologies requires that the most massive black holes in E and S0 galaxies accrete with lower Eddington ratios, or have a lower incidence of Seyfert activity, than the central black holes of later type galaxies.

AGN Zoo and Classications of Active Galaxies

We review the variety of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) classes (so-calledAGN zoo") and classification schemes of galaxies by activity types based on their optical emission-line spectrum, as well as other parameters and other than optical wave-length ranges. A historical overview of discoveries of various types of active galaxies is given, including Seyfert galaxies, radio galaxies, QSOs, BL Lace...

Black Hole Demography from Nearby Active Galactic Nuclei

A significant fraction of local galaxies show evidence of nuclear activity. I argue that the bulk of this activity, while energetically not remarkable, derives from accretion onto a central massive black hole. The statistics of nearby active galactic nuclei thus provide an effective probe of black hole demography. Consistent with the picture emerging from direct dynamical studies, the local cen...

Nuclear Activity in Nearby Galaxies

A significant fraction of nearby galaxies show evidence of weak nuclear activity unrelated to normal stellar processes. Recent high-resolution, multiwavelength observations indicate that the bulk of this activity derives from black hole accretion with a wide range of accretion rates. The low accretion rates that typify most low-luminosity active galactic nuclei induce significant modifications ...

The HST view of LINERs nuclei: evidence for a dual population?

We study a complete and distance-limited sample of 25 LINERs, 21 of which have been imaged with the Hubble Space Telescope. In nine objects we detect an unresolved nucleus. In order to study their physical properties, we compare the radio and optical properties of the nuclei of LINERs with those of other samples of local AGNs, namely Seyfert galaxies and low-luminosity radio galaxies (LLRG). Ou...

Radiatively inefficient accretion disks in Low Luminosity AGN †

We study a complete and distance-limited sample of 25 LINERs, 21 of which have been imaged with the Hubble Space Telescope to study their physical properties and to compare their radio and optical properties with those of other samples of local AGNs, namely Seyfert galaxies and low-luminosity radio galaxies (LLRG). Our results show that the LINERs population is not homogeneous, as there are two...
